Adding aftermarket parts does not automatically void your vehicle warranty. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer generally has to show that an aftermarket part caused a failure before denying a warranty claim for that failure. The bigger risk is a poor installation. Tapping the wrong circuits or skipping proper fusing can cause battery drains, warning lights and electrical damage.
What the law says
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act is a federal law that covers consumer product warranties, including vehicles. In practice, it means:
- A manufacturer can't void your entire warranty just because you installed an aftermarket part or had service done somewhere other than the dealer.
- To deny a specific warranty claim, the manufacturer generally has to show the aftermarket part or installation caused that problem.
- Your warranty can't require you to use a specific brand of parts or service unless those are provided free.
Keep your receipts and install records. They're your best protection.
Where installs go wrong
Most aftermarket problems come from the installation, not the part:
- Tapping the wrong circuit. Modern vehicles use data networks and sensitive modules. Splicing into the wrong wire can trigger warning lights or damage modules.
- No fuse, or the wrong fuse. It's a fire and damage risk.
- Constant-power accessories that drain the battery overnight
- Poor connections. Twisted wires and tape corrode in humid weather.
- Bad routing. Wires that chafe against metal or sit near exhaust heat
Popular installs, done right
| Install | What "done right" means |
|---|---|
| LED and auxiliary lighting | Relay and fuse, proper switch, sealed connections, legal aim and color |
| Trailer wiring and brake controllers | Correct vehicle-specific harness or converter, a tested brake controller, proper ground |
| Dash cams (hardwired) | Fused add-a-circuit, low-voltage cutoff, hidden routing that clears the airbag |
| GPS / telematics trackers | Correct power source and placement for signal; often OBD or hardwired |
| Backup cameras and sensors | Clean routing, weatherproof connections, tested display |
| Work lights, beacons, inverters | Properly sized wiring and fusing, battery protection |
For fleets
Rolling out dash cams or trackers across a fleet? Consistent installs make troubleshooting easier and keep warranty claims clean. Scheduling the installs at your lot keeps vehicles in service. See fleet programs.
Lighting laws
South Carolina, like most states, regulates the color, placement and use of vehicle lighting, especially red and blue lights, flashing lights and off-road light bars on public roads. We'll install to keep you street-legal.
Frequently asked questions
Will a remote start or dash cam void my warranty?
Not automatically. If the accessory or installation causes a specific failure, a claim for that failure may be denied.
Can you install parts I bought online?
Usually, yes. Tell us what you have when you book so we can confirm fit and wiring.
Can a bad install drain my battery?
Yes. Accessories wired to constant power without a cutoff are a common cause of dead batteries.
Do you do aftermarket installs on-site?
Yes, for personal vehicles and fleets, right where they're parked.
