What a VIN tells you
A Vehicle Identification Number is a 17-character code assigned at the factory. The first three characters identify the manufacturer and country. Characters 4–8 describe the model, body and engine. The 9th is a check digit that catches typos. The 10th is the model year, the 11th is the assembly plant, and the last six are the vehicle's serial number.
Because the VIN encodes the exact configuration, it's the most reliable way to look up recalls, parts and specs. It's how we order the right parts for every repair.
Recalls vs. complaints
A recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines a safety defect exists, and the repair is free at a franchised dealer. A complaint is a report an owner files with NHTSA. Complaints aren't verified, but when hundreds of owners report the same thing, it often points to a known weak spot worth watching. Sometimes it's the early sign of a future recall.

VIN check questions
Is this VIN check really free?
Yes. It uses public data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the EPA. There's no sign-up and no paywall.
Does it show recalls for my exact VIN?
It shows every recall NHTSA lists for your vehicle's year, make and model. Not every recall applies to every VIN, so confirm open recalls for your specific vehicle at nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a franchised dealer. Recall repairs are free at the dealer.
What does 'same build as yours' mean?
NHTSA complaint records include the first 11 characters of the complaining owner's VIN. We count complaints whose first 8 characters match yours, which means the same manufacturer and the same model, body and engine configuration.
What is a VIN check digit?
The 9th character of every North American VIN is calculated from the other 16 with a weighted formula. If it doesn't match, the VIN was probably typed wrong. Our tool shows the full math.
Does this replace a vehicle history report?
No. Title, accident and ownership history come from paid services like CARFAX or NMVTIS reports. This tool covers factory specs, recalls, complaints, safety ratings and fuel economy.
Can I check a whole fleet at once?
Yes. Switch to Fleet mode and paste up to 25 VINs. You'll get a table of every vehicle with its recall count, which you can download as a CSV.
Where do I find my VIN?
Look at the driver's side of the dashboard through the windshield, on the driver's door jamb sticker, or on your registration or insurance card.
