Engine temperature warning light
Also called: coolant temperature light, overheating light
The engine is overheating. Pull over and let it cool.
What it means
This light comes on when the coolant temperature gets too high. A blue version of the same symbol on some cars just means the engine is still cold. Red means hot. Running an overheating engine can warp the cylinder head and blow the head gasket.

Keep an eye on it
It came on briefly in stop-and-go heat, went off once moving again, and the coolant level is full. Watch it and have the cooling fan checked.
Schedule a repair
It comes on more often, the gauge runs higher than normal, or coolant keeps getting low. Book a visit before it turns into a breakdown.
Stop and get help
Steam, a sweet smell, the gauge pegged hot, or the engine losing power. Pull over and shut it off. Never open a hot radiator cap.
