FAQ

Check engine code questions

How do I read an OBD-II code?

The first letter is the system: P for powertrain, B body, C chassis, U network. A 0 in the second spot means a generic code that's the same on every vehicle; a 1 means manufacturer-specific. The last three characters identify the specific fault.

Will a code clear itself?

Many codes clear after the problem is fixed and the vehicle completes several drive cycles. Clearing a code without fixing the cause just brings it back, and it can make an emissions inspection fail because the monitors reset.

Where can I get my codes read?

Many parts stores read codes for free, and inexpensive Bluetooth scanners work with your phone. A code is a starting point; diagnosis confirms the cause.
